Akron's decommissioned Wallhaven fire station goes on the market for redevelopment

Akron has put the old Fire Station No. 12 in Wallhaven up for sale to developers who can find a new use for the property.

The retired Fire Station No. 12 was built in 1952 and served the community for more than 70 years before being replaced by the state-of-the-art facility at 112 S. Hawkins Ave.

“The property is in the Wallhaven neighborhood — named after the Wallhaven Hotel and service station as the first businesses in the area,” the city said in an Oct. 3 release. “Other businesses soon followed, including the original Swenson’s that still resides in Wallhaven.”

The city is specifically seeking proposals for redevelopment that repurposes the existing building or razes the on-site building in favor of new construction. However, the city has outlined certain prohibited uses in its request for proposals. Questions should be submitted in writing to Development@akronohio.gov.

Plans for gas stations, billboards, parking lots, vape or smoke shops, car lots or automotive service uses won’t be considered, the city said.

Proposals are due no later than 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. They can be uploaded at Akronohio.Submittable.com and selecting the application for Fire Station 12 RFP, or delivered to the city of Akron Office of Economic Development at 166 South High Street, Room 202, Akron, Ohio 44308.
