New Yorkers on high alert
Since the first strikes in Iran over the weekend, safety has been top of mind for New Yorkers.
On March 2, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins kicked off his weekly press briefing by acknowledging “that we are in a war with Iran right now,” and noted that the county Department of Public Safety was monitoring military actions in Iran.
He said the department was “working in collaboration with federal law enforcement partners to receive and share any intelligence information” associated with the events in Iran. He noted the county would be working with municipal and regional partners on any potential threats to Westchester and the Hudson Valley.
Law enforcement had already increased patrols around houses of worship in Westchester due to upcoming religious holidays and observances such as Ramadan, Lent and Passover.
New York State Police officials said troopers would increase their presence at religious, diplomatic and cultural sites in coordination with federal, state and local law enforcement partners. State Police have also begun proactive outreach to religious organizations to ensure they have support and direct points of contact, particularly ahead of the Jewish holiday of Purim.
“At this time, there are no specific, credible threats to New York,” officials said on Feb. 28. “However, we continue to vigorously monitor for potential threats and remain prepared to respond as needed.”
In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani told FOX 5 said there were no threats to the city, and noted that NYPD was ramping up police presence out of an “abundance of caution.”
“I’m appreciative of what the NYPD is doing, because it is both reassuring New Yorkers, who are understandably concerned at this time,” Mamdani continued. “And also ensuring we are taking every single step we can to be prepared in light of anything resulting from the actions of the federal government and Israeli government.”
Mamdani said he has not spoken to Trump since his recent meeting with him in the Oval Office Feb. 26.
