Surveillance cameras help Yonkers police make quick arrest in Ludlow Street killing

Yonkers police used surveillance cameras to track a suspect and arrested him 15 minutes after a fatal shooting, police said in a news release.

Felix Santiago, 42, of Yonkers, was shot in the abdomen just after 10:30 pm Sunday Aug. 31, outside 27 Ludlow St. Responding officers began emergency care and Santiago was taken to a local hospital but died a short time later.

Officers in the Yonkers AWARE crime-control center observed the suspect on surveillance cameras and relayed a description and location to patrol officers, who took Linzell Staggers into custody a short time later on South Broadway. They also recovered a 9mm handgun with a 30-round magazine from Staggers, police said in the news release Monday.

“This quick arrest is the direct result of prompt patrol response, solid investigation, and using the technology available to us to apprehend this killer within 15 minutes of the incident, just a few blocks away from the crime,” Yonkers police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said in a statement. “Fair warning to those thinking of committing violence in our city- we have the resources here to identify you, locate you, and quickly place you into custody to answer for your acts.”

Police said that the shooting resulted from a dispute between Staggers and a relative of Santiago’s, although the relative was not believed to have been present at the time of the shooting. They said Staggers fired three shots before fleeing.

Staggers, 26, of Yonkers, is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and is expected to be arraigned later on Monday.
