If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be surprised to find no payment arriving in September. Don’t worry — this isn’t an error. It’s a quirk in the calendar that happens a few times each year.
Here’s why SSI payments won’t be issued in September 2025, and when you can expect to get your benefits next.
No SSI payment in September: Here’s why
Although millions of Americans rely on monthly SSI payments, there won’t be one scheduled for September 2025. That’s because September 1 falls on a federal holiday — Labor Day.
When that happens, the Social Security Administration issues payments early, on the preceding business day.
As a result, September’s SSI payment will be deposited on Friday, August 29, making it appear as though there’s no September payment — but recipients still receive 12 total payments in the year.

What about Social Security retirement or disability payments?
If you receive regular Social Security (retirement or SSDI), your payment will still arrive in September. Those payments follow a separate schedule, based on your birth date or the date you first started receiving benefits:
What if your payment doesn’t arrive?
If your scheduled payment doesn’t show up, SSA advises waiting three mailing days before contacting them. Most payments are issued via direct deposit, which helps reduce delays.
