Despite sporting a 3-9 record this season, the New York Jets have fielded a competitive team in the trenches. They have taken on the identity of head coach Aaron Glenn, who preaches toughness and competitiveness. ESPN Stats & Info tracks advanced data categories such as pass-block-win-rates, run-block-win-rates, and run-stop-win-rates (along with pass-rushing production).
An updated look at the data shows several Jets players in the top-10 win rates of these individual metrics. Starting center Josh Myers ranks 7th-best among all interior offensive lineman in pass-block-win rate (PBWR). Pro Football Focus largely agrees, claiming he’s only given up one sack this season.
Rookie right tackle Armand Membou ranks 9th-best among offensive tackles in run-block-win-rate (RBWR). The Jets have been competitive on the ground. Both Justin Fields (when he was starting) and Breece Hall have found success on the ground.
Perhaps most interesting of all, the Jets have three defensive linemen in the top 10 of run-stop-win-rate (RSWR). Jermaine Johnson II and Will McDonald rank sixth and eighth respectively among EDGE rushers, and breakout stud Jowon Briggs places ninth among interior defensive tackles. That doesn’t exactly align with the Jets’ run defense, which ranks 25th in the NFL (131.2/game).
The Jets are rebuilding. The roster is already taking on Glenn’s preferred identity by playing hard-nosed football in the trenches on both sides of the ball. That’s an excellent sign for the Jets moving forward, as Darren Mougey prepares to add more talent this offseason.
