Three meet records were established at the Section 9 boys indoor track and field state qualifier meet at the New York Armory on Saturday, February 28.
Senior Maximillian Wickrath of Minisink Valley set a meet record with a 6.32 second prelims finish (6.34 final) in the 55 meters, snapping the 2022 mark of 6.44 by Jadon Spain of O’Neill. He’s the first Minisink sprinter to win since Denis Street in 2002.
Wallkill senior Nathaniel Diemoz set a meet record in the 1,000 (2 minutes, 28.37 seconds), breaking the 1984 mark of Miguel Castillo of Monticello (2:30.9).
Tri-Valley junior Kane Poje smashed the meet record in the weight throw (74 feet, 4.5 inches), breaking the mark of Minisink Valley’s Tom Reiser (67-9.5) from 2017. He was the meet’s only double winner in individual events, posting the best winning throw in the shot put (57-8) in 11 years and was first Tri-Valley thrower to win since Aric Boyes in 2013.
Warwick senior Luke Beattie won the pole vault (17-0) for the third time in a row, the first to do so since Dave Eckert of Millbrook (2000-02). Beattie moved up to 18 feet, one-half inch but failed on three attempts.
Cornwall senior Ilunga Salerno won the 55 hurdles (7.77), repeating his win from 2024; he’s the first repeat winner since Warwick’s Jesse Fuca in 2006-07. Washingtonville’s Cameron Snyder became the first repeat winner in the 300 (34.27) since Wallkill’s John Gustafson (1994-96).
Robert LaBarbera is the first Minisink runner to win the 600 meters (1:20.37, taking 2.5 seconds off his best). Luke Potter is first Cornwall runner to win the 1,600 (4:21.99) since Mike Vecchio in 2014. Daniel McPherson is first Pine Plains runner to win the 3,200 (9:28.46). Jack Fowler is first Pine Bush athlete to win high jump (6-4) since Pat Taaffe in 2002. Warwick’s Isaiah Gonzalez won the long jump (22-11.5), missing the meet mark by 3 inches. Junior Jaden Williams was first Newburgh winner to win triple jump (45-9) since the younger David McFadgen in 2004.
The top two finishers in each event advance to states. Additionally, the top finisher beyond the top two who have met a state-meet standard will also advance; the same goes for the top relay finishers beyond just the winner.
