Said Watkins Glen coach Alicia Learn: “The girls came out with some tough defense. They played hard and together. We switched some things up tonight and it took us a little to get going, but the ladies did a great job getting it done.”

Watkins Glen plays at second-seeded Chenango Forks in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 3. Forks won its quarterfinal, 75-46, over Sidney.

Section 4 Class C Quarterfinals

3-Bainbridge-Guilford 67, 6-Elmira Notre Dame 36

The Crusaders finished with an 11-9 record after trailing 39-17 at halftime.

Union Springs: Maddy Kalet 18 points, Jenny Daum 12 points.

Union Springs will play Bainbridge-Guilford in a semifinal Tuesday, March 3 at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Moravia: Caraline Wasileski scored 25 points and reached 1,000 for her career. She also had 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Kylee Cooper and Lashley Heredia Castillo 11 points each; Kendell Hess 10 points.

Elmira 55, Waverly 53

Elmira: Meya Smith hit two free throws with 6 seconds left. Smith finished with 15 points. Mariah Matias 18 points, Kayvonna King 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Said Elmira coach A’Don Allen: “We got a big lift from Kayvonna King today. She’s been practicing really well, and with Avery McCauley out, she stepped right in and carried that confidence on to the floor.

“We were a little flat in the first half, but the girls responded with great energy in the third quarter — that’s the level we’re capable of playing at consistently. Waverly made a strong run in the fourth and we got a bit lax for a stretch, but we stayed composed when it mattered most. Mariah Matias did a great job working the clock down and finding Meya, who attacked, got fouled, and calmly knocked down both free throws to seal it.”

Horseheads (16-2): Maddie Ribble career-high 25 points, Samantha Bonnell 11 points. Maggie Tremaine (7 points) hit a 3-pointer and two foul shots to help put away the game.

C-G: Kara Mahany 12 points.

Horseheads ranked sixth in Class AA by New York State Sports Writers Association. Canisteo-Greenwood ranked second in Class C.

Said Horseheads coach Andy Scott: “One of the best opponents we saw this year. Physical, talented and athletic. Down six at halftime and we had a 13-point swing in the third and nailed free throws down the stretch to seal it.”

Horseheads will host Chenango Forks in a STAC tournament semifinal at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 at Horseheads Middle School. Susquehanna Valley hosts Maine-Endwell at 7 that day in the other semifinal. Final is Feb. 21 at Corning-Painted Post High School.

Elmira 57, Binghamton 32

Elmira: Mariah Matias 18 points, Meya Smith 12 points.

Binghamton: Campbell 13 points.

Said Elmira coach A’Don Allen: “This was probably our most complete game of the season. Defensively, we were locked in from start to finish, and offensively we moved the ball well and played unselfishly. It was a true team win.

“Just as important, the energy and focus from the girls over the last few games has been fantastic. That’s a great sign as we continue to build momentum heading into March and the postseason.”

Said Elmira coach A’Don Allen: “This was a great team win, especially coming off a tough loss (Friday). Our kids responded the right way. They made plays, stayed together, and showed a ton of resilience when Averill Park made their run late and pushed the game into overtime.

“Ava Roberts came up big in the second half and again in overtime. Tamiah Brown played her best game of the season. Meya Smith played tough and stayed composed while battling through foul trouble. Mariah Matias gutted it out on a bad ankle, and every kid on our roster gave us something meaningful when we needed it.”
