Rome bowler wins Athlete of the Week poll

A senior bowler threw her highest scores of the season and helped the Rome Free Academy Black Knight remain undefeated, and that earned reader support for the Athlete of the Week for January 12-18 in polling of online readers of the Observer-Dispatch and Times Telegram.

Mylie Weyant threw a 671 series with a high game of 257 in a Wednesday match against Camden at King Pin Lanes. The 5-0 victory ran the Black Knights’ record to 10-0, and Rome Free Academy added a win over Whitesboro later in the week. The 600 series was Weyant’s fifth of the season and third in a row.

The Observer-Dispatch and Times Telegram have a fresh slate of nominees for online readers to consider for Mohawk Valley Athlete of the Week voting for the week of January 12-18, the seventh week of winter competition.

Whitesboro wrestler John DiBrango is the most recent winner of the weekly poll. DiBrango follows three basketball players – seniors Lejla Kendic of Sauquoit Valley and Haylee Bostwick of Rome Free Academy, and Central Valley Academy freshman Kiley Beam – and wrestlers Victor Petronella of New Hartford and Vinny Henrickson of Central Valley Academy during the winter athletic season. The new ballot includes athletes from area basketball, hockey, volleyball, wrestling and bowling teams, and the polls will be open until Thursday, January 29, at noon.

Fifteen scholastic athletes from across the Mohawk Valley are nominated on a ballot for the seventh week of winter scholastic athletic competition.

A weekly list of nominees is compiled by the sports department with information provided to the Times Telegram and the Observer-Dispatch by coaches and athletic directors through emails and other contacts.

If a top performer’s name doesn’t appear on the list, encourage their coach or athletic director to email submissions to sports@timestelegram.com or sports@uticaod.com.

Voting closes Thursday and a winner is scheduled to be announced later that day on the TimesTelegram.com and UticaOD.com websites.
