The National Weather Service is advising some communities in downstate New York to be ready for coastal flooding Sunday night, Jan. 25.
According to a special weather statement from the NWS, there could be a risk of “brief minor flooding of the most vulnerable locations” with potential for “less than one foot of inundation above ground level” near the waterfront and shoreline late Sunday night.

In New York, the risk applies to southern Westchester, the Bronx, northern Queens and areas of Long Island (including northwest, northeast and southeast Suffolk County and northern Nassau.) Southern Fairfield County in Connecticut is also included.
The NWS statement warns of 3 to 5-foot “breaking waves along north to northeast facing shorelines along western Long Island Sound and Gardiners Bay will locally exacerbate flooding of shoreline roads and adjacent properties, with minor beach erosion.”
“Do not drive through flooded roadways,” the statement says.
According to a weather hazard map issued Saturday by the NWS, “there is a low threat of property damage” and no direct threat to life.
