Looking for a Westchester restaurant recognized by The Michelin Guide?
Ever since Michelin inspectors added the county to their repertoire in 2019, there have been a host of “Bib Gourmand” nods, meaning “good food at a moderate price,” as well as “Recommended,” which means exactly as it sounds.
And there have been stars, the highest of the highest honors from what’s long been the benchmark in gastronomy.
Up until last December, however, there was only one restaurant — Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills — which had achieved coveted Michelin “star status,” which denotes “excellent cuisine, worth a detour.”
That changed, when La Bastide by Andrea Calstier in North Salem, which at the time had been open less than a year, was awarded one star.
Two Westchester restaurants with Michelin stars
The intimate French restaurant, which features a multi-course tasting menu, highly curated wine list, and a concentration on seasonal ingredients, is owned by husband and wife Andrea Calstier and Elena Oliver who also own Cenadou Bistrot, their more casual dining spot upstairs.
Calstier went to culinary school in Marseille and worked at various Michelin-starred restaurants in France before coming to New York and working with celebrity chef Daniel Boulud. In 2018, he and Oliver opened the now closed Papilles in Manhattan’s East Village. They opened Cenadou in June 2023 and La Bastide in February 2024.
Inspectors wrote how the design of the modern farmhouse “perfectly complements sweeping views of the pastoral landscape and how a “simple-sounding salad is so much more with grilled gem lettuce paired with poached celtuce, cured egg yolk, and an olive oil sabayon.
“Squab with rosemary and fig leaf is as accomplished as grilled black sea bass with artichokes and razor clams. Dessert is a particular strength, and the combination of chocolate with goat cheese is a thrilling finale.”
Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, which pioneered farm-to-table dining when it opened in 2004, has, on the other hand, consistently received two stars as well as a green star, which recognizes its status as a leader in sustainable gastronomy.
The restaurant sits in a former dairy barn on 80 acres of land donated by the Rockefeller family and works in tandem with a farm and education center, Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, which is also on the property.
Since the beginning, chef and founder Dan Barber has consistently sought out eco-friendly and low-waste practices to enhance his menus. He’s also worked with seed breeders at the genetic level to develop more nutritious and delicious fruit and vegetables.
Stars, however, are only part of what Michelin does. As previously mentioned, inspectors also dole out “Bib Gourmand” and “Recommended” status. So far, there are more than two dozen restaurants in Westchester with those honors.
