Is your car safe? How to check for recalls in New York

Vehicle recalls can affect almost every part of your car, from brakes to airbags. Addressing them promptly is crucial for staying safe on the road. In 2024, the New York DMV reported that one in five cars on the road had an open recall, with over 2 million of those vehicles in New York alone. Light trucks, minivans, and cars all accounted for a significant share of unrepaired recalls.

“Checking your vehicle for recalls only takes a few minutes, but it can potentially save your life or the lives of others,” said DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, Mark J.F. Schroeder.

The New York DMV links to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall search tool, where you can check for open recalls and find instructions for repairs or free part replacements.

Enter your vehicle’s 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), found on:

Review any listed recalls and follow the instructions to schedule repairs with your dealer.

You can also check recalls for car seats, tires, and equipment like bike racks by typing in the brand and model.

Manufacturers must repair, replace, or refund recalled items at no cost.

Recall notifications and alerts

New Yorkers are notified of recalls during annual vehicle inspections, but you don’t have to wait. To receive alerts directly:

In 2024, NHTSA issued 1,073 recalls covering vehicles, car seats, tires, RVs, and other equipment, with over 29 million vehicles recalled nationwide.

The DMV notes that owners may be unable to complete an inspection or register their vehicle if a high-risk recall repair is not addressed.
