High wind warnings issued across NY as gusts threaten power outages

Strong winds are expected to sweep across parts of western New York on Friday, prompting a high wind warning and wind advisory from the National Weather Service in Buffalo, New York.

A high wind warning is in effect from noon Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday for the Niagara Frontier, including Niagara Falls, Medina, Buffalo, Batavia, Warsaw, Orchard Park and Springville. Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected.

In Chautauqua County, including Jamestown, the high wind warning begins at 8 a.m. Friday and continues until 5 a.m. Saturday. Southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected Friday morning, strengthening to 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph Friday afternoon through late Friday night.

Wind advisory across Rochester region

A wind advisory is in effect from noon Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday for Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Livingston, Ontario, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. Cities affected include Rochester, Newark, Fair Haven, Geneseo, Canandaigua, Olean and Wellsville. Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph are forecast.

Forecasters warn the strong winds could knock down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. Travel may also be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, avoid wooded areas and trees when possible, and use caution while driving.
