Giants teeter on edge of infamy: Must topple Bears to avert 11th straight road loss

The New York Giants (2-7) head out to Illinois to face the Chicago Bears (5-3) at blustery Soldier Field this Sunday afternoon. Oddsmakers currently have them as 4.5-point underdogs, and the moneyline is slipping further and further in the Bears’ favor.

The Giants’ two wins this season have come at home, and they have yet to win on the road. They are 0-5 and have not won a road game since they upset the Seahawks in Seattle in Week 5 of last season. That’s 10 games ago.

If they lose this Sunday in Chicago, the Giants will set a new franchise record for consecutive road losses (11), breaking the tie with the sorry 1978-79 team.

“I’m focused on this week, so we’ve got to do a good job against this team, and that’s what’s most important,” head coach Brian Daboll said when the prospect of setting a new franchise low was broached on Friday.

The Giants’ defense is the main culprit this year, allowing 27.7 points per game and 35.0 over their last three (all losses). That fleshes out to 471 points allowed over 17 games. That would be the second-highest point yielded by Big Blue in a single season. The franchise record for points allowed in a single season is 501 in 1966 (14 games).

Daboll has no intention of cutting ties with defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, at least not in-season.

That decision may ultimately cost Daboll his job, especially if the team continues to set all-time franchise marks for futility and failure.
