When it comes to hard-hitting journalism, reporters often ask deeper questions than the basic “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” and “why” — but in today’s day and age, a little simplicity can go a long way.
This summer, reporters went out to investigate empty storefronts in the Lower Hudson Valley, and started conversations with their sources, and locals, with the question: “What’s going there?”
Reporters were also encouraged to take out their cameras, and film the interviews with the people they met. This started a variety of interesting conversations.
From conversations with locals to key moments caught on camera
From conversations with Harrison residents on where they now shop for groceries after the closure of the Harrison Market, to capturing the moment a high school football quarterback battling cancer made a coin toss call at a recent game with the help of a smartphone, The Journal News/lohud.com reporters and photojournalists are quick on their feet and quick with their cameras.
You’ll notice these additional videos are shot vertically, rather than the traditional horizontal capture. That’s intentional. These videos are crafted to display on social media platforms like our lohud Instagram. They also look great on The Journal News mobile app, which is available to download for free on iPhone and Android.
