A former middle school teacher in Ontario County, New York, has been accused of giving a child a controlled substance.
Trista Lynn Corey, 33, of Geneva, New York, was charged Tuesday with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, following an investigation that stemmed from a December incident at Corey’s home, according to the Geneva Police Department.
Corey is accused of giving Psilocybin mushrooms to a child younger than 17 at her residence, officers said. According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Psilocybin mushrooms are commonly known as shrooms are are psychedelic drugs, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
Corey was issued an appearance ticket and is to be arraigned in Geneva City Court at a later date.
According to the Geneva City School District, Corey was formerly a special education teacher at Geneva Middle School.
“As soon as the district became aware of the allegations, it promptly notified law enforcement and immediately addressed Ms. Corey’s employment status,” district officials said in a statement posted on the district’s website. “She is no longer employed by the district.
“The safety, health, and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Geneva Middle School continues to operate safely under its established leadership.”
District officials said they could not further comment on the matter since it is part of an ongoing police investigation. Police are working with the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office and the school district regarding the investigation
