Some of the best teams in Westchester have a chance this week to make waves across the region.
Iona Prep is hosting Wilton, Connecticut on Tuesday and heading for Don Boso, New Jersey on Thursday. Rye is taking on Garden City on Wednesday at Nugent Stadium. Yorktown is facing Darien, the No. 1 team in Connecticut and Greeley is heading for Staples, Conn. on Thursday. Mamaroneck is bringing in Greenwich, Conn. on Saturday.
A couple of wins against that kind of competition would be a good week.

Iona Prep compensates for shaky execution with noteworthy effort
NEW ROCHELLE – Iona Prep is looking to level up.
Fast.
Knowing they have an opportunity to play giant killer this season, the Gaels had a few regrets Tuesday following a 10-8 win over Wilton, Connecticut.
There’s a lot to clean up in the next 24 hours.
“I’d say that practice has been a whole lot better than what’s happening in games,” senior attackman Tim Plunkett said. “I think it’s on me and Billy (Haggerty). We have to quarterback the offense better. We’ve been playing too selfishly. The ball needs to move more and we need to be talking more to the younger guys. I mean, they’re talented and know what they’re doing, but the chemistry is something we’re still working to develop.”
Iona Prep is scheduled to play four programs that are currently ranked nationally, starting with a Thursday visit to Don Bosco in New Jersey. St. Anthony’s, Chaminade and Salesianum (Delaware) are on top 25 lists, as well.
At least two more future opponents, New Canaan (Connecticut) and Seton Hall Prep (New Jersey) are East Coast powers that could work themselves into the rankings.
“If we play at the level we played at today, it’s not going to be pretty,” said Haggerty, a senior attackman. “This was definitely a good game to get all that our of our systems. Our seniors have played top 25 teams and know what it’s like to play at that level. We know we’re capable of knocking a great team off but we have to clean some things up (Wednesday) in practice and come ready for an opportunity to play a really good team. For the last four years, we’ve been waiting to knock off a top 25 team.”
Box score
Wilton (0-1): Charlie Calabrese 1G; Brady Corry 1G, 1A; Colin Faherty 1G; Will Viggiano 1A; Dylan Flanagan 1G; Jack Hamilton 2G, 3A; Connor McAndrews 2G, 1A; Trevor Galligan 12S.
Iona Prep (2-0): Dillon Sikes 3G; Billy Haggerty 3G; Tim Plunkett 2G; Matt Napolitano 2A; Ryder Ettere 1A; Sean O’Boyle 1A; Drew Hiltsey 1A; Michael Genova 1G; Shane Banahan 1G; Jake Davies 1A. Ryan Elliott 8S.
Takeaways
Iona Prep coach Rick Trizano had to step away to deal with a medical issue, but is hoping to return later in the season. He met with the Gaels on Monday.
“He brought us into the locker room and it was definitely a little emotional just because of the man he is and the coach he is,” Haggerty said. “It’s next man up, even for the coaches. He taught most of the coaches here so there’s no difference. There’s not as much yelling. He told the captains after that we needed to help take care of the younger guys and use our voices more while he’s out.”
Nick Trizano is the primary voice while his dad heals.
Iona Prep is breaking in a new batch of midfielders and needs to raise the trust level so the ball moves freely. The Gaels let three leads get away before Haggerty, Sikes and Plunkett fueled a three-goal, fourth-quarter run that locked up the win.
Keep an eye on Gaels junior Shane Banahan who is pretty darn feisty on faceoffs and will be an important piece against the high-level competition.

Rye unable to keep pace with Garden City
RYE – Looking for the silver lining?
There were moments at both ends of the field where Rye was able to stay in stride with a nationally ranked opponent. A humbling 12-4 loss to Garden City on Wednesday, though, illustrated the importance of stringing those moments into stretches that last more than 70 seconds.
Each mental and physical mistake proved costly.
“We were slow in transition,” Garnets senior midfielder Carson Miller said. “They were beating us in the sub game continuously. Our sticks were not good at all. We just kept committing turnovers and getting them into transition. We were kind of just lazy. There was a lack of effort from myself and the other midfielders to get over, play defense and stop what they do best, score in transition with all those great athletes.”
Yep.
It got away very quickly. Miller threw a pinpoint setup to Henry Gilroy for a goal on the crease in the opening minute of the second quarter. The highlight-worthy connection got Rye within 3-2 and provided needed adrenaline.
Ben Smith answered for the defending NYSPHSAA Class B champions a mere 19 seconds later, sparking a 5-1 run to close out the half.
“We have to buckle down in practice,” junior attackman Charlie Brady said. “They probably got eight goals in transition. We have to play harder than we did today. … Our schedule is extremely hard this year. These games are going to teach us a lot of lessons. We’re going to develop going against that kind of talent and get better each game. When it comes time for the playoffs, we’ll be ready.”
Box score

Takeaways
Over the last five years, Rye is 2-8 against traditional Long Island powers. The wins both came against Cold Spring Harbor.
Miller scored 70 seconds after halftime to make it 8-4, but Rye was shut out the rest of the way. There will be a time when the systems put in place by a new coaching staff feel more familiar and the play calls prompt a change of direction without a delay.
Robertiello was a problem for the Garnets at the X. Garden City netted three quick-strike goals when the Penn State commit went into attack mode off wins.

Yorktown resets, then upsets, nationally-ranked Darien
YORKTOWN – Seriously?
To be polite, the interstate rivalry between Yorktown and Darien, Connecticut has been lopsided for a decade, so another demonstrative win by the nationally-ranked Blue Wave felt inevitable.
Surprise!
A clever game plan and disciplined execution by the Huskers resulted in a stunning 9-6 win Thursday at Charlie Murphy Field.
It was the very definition of an upset.
“This is amazing,” Yorktown defender Evan Kurth said. “We just knew we could beat these guys. Practice has been very, very active this week. We’ve really been getting after each other. We knew we were prepared for this game.”
After suffering a humbling loss to Cold Spring Harbor a week ago, the Huskers got serious. That reality check is responsible for a moment that stirred up memories of the program’s glory days.
“We’re all very energized now,” Yorktown attackman Tommy Carney said. “We know we can be a great team. We have to get to that level, though. We are going to be playing more great teams and we have to stay focused.”
The bar is now considerably higher for the Huskers.
Getting a jump on the No. 21 team in the USA Lacrosse Magazine High School Boys’ National Top 25 was critical and Carney made it 1-0 with 6:30 to play in the first quarter, converting a Vinny Marchini setup.
The Blue Wave answered a minute later, but Ryan Fastiggi got Yorktown back on top and Frankie Ofrias pumped up the volume when he extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second quarter.
Hunter Mezzatesta delivered a pair of brazen saves and Tyler Caricati began piling up faceoff wins.
“It was so important to get those early goals,” Carney said. “We were very motivated this entire week. Everybody had to contribute, so I’m proud of everyone today.”
Darien flexed momentarily, going on a 4-1 run to close out the half.
J.T. Carney knotted the score then dodged from X and shoveled in a goal, putting the Huskers in front 6-5 with 6:04 to play in the third. Yorktown was in control of the clock the entire game. The offense moved the ball without hesitation and used time wisely. Brady Sheridan, Fastiggi and Ofrias made it a five-goal, second-half run and had the Huskers up 9-5 with 8:21 remaining.
One last Mezzatesa save in the closing minutes put an exclamation point on the win.
“After the Cold Spring Harbor game, we really got on each other,” Kurth said. “We almost got too mad, but we prepared all week for this. I knew as soon as we stepped on the field, the defense had it. We all were communicating, sliding and helping. It was a great performance.”
Box score
Darien (2-1): Max McBride 2G; Ryan Thurlow 1G, 1A; Chase Lane 1G; Henry Jeffels 1G, 1A; Wes Scallin 1G; Teddy Baum 1A; Blake Wilson 4S.
Yorktown (2-1): Frankie Ofrias 3G; Tommy Carney 1G, 1A; J.T. Carney 2G; Gianluca Marchini 3A; Ryan Fastiggi 2G, Brady Sheridan 1G; Hunter Mezzatesta 10S; Tyler Caricati 12/17FO.
Takeaways
Since 2009, the game has been played to honor a longtime Westchester/Fairfield lacrosse superfan, but it’s been so long since Darien lost, the Blue Wave neglected to bring the Tom Lener Memorial Cup so the handoff will occur in the coming days.
Fastiggi had a tough day against Cold Spring Harbor, but more than made up for it Thursday with his performance at the X. He was quick off the whistle and secured each possession with attitude.
Yorktown’s patience under pressure was impressive. There are several movers and shakers on the offensive end who can run clock and still get a quality look. And they can make quick decisions, too, in transition. Don’t be surprised if the Huskers go with this game plan again.
