IOWA CITY — West High offensive lineman Colin Whitters typically blocks for touchdowns. But the Iowa football commit also took on a different role against Muscatine on Oct. 3.
With West High near the end zone in the second quarter, the Trojans put the ball in Whitters’ hands. On a play that featured some misdirection, West High quarterback Reece Wheeler handed it off to Whitters, who fought through multiple defenders and reached over the goal line to score a touchdown.
Whitters, listed at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds and committed to the Hawkeyes, was elated.
On the sideline after the play, Whitters proclaimed, “I saw the end zone and I wanted that s— more than anything. I pretended that was like Steak ‘n Shake.”
Whitters, a senior at West High, is one of five offensive linemen committed to the Hawkeyes in the 2026 recruiting class. He is a 3-star prospect, according the 247Sports Composite.
“He brings intensity,” Trojans coach Garrett Hartwig told the Register leading up to the matchup with Muscatine. “He’s got natural ability and he’s big and strong and very agile for his size. But I think what he brings is just a level of confidence with the guys around him. I think players feel better when he’s by their side, and I think that raises their game.”
Whitters is one of two Iowa football pledges on the Trojans’ current roster. Julian Manson, the top player in the state of Iowa’s 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, is committed to the Hawkeyes as a linebacker. Manson and Whitters have been program cornerstones and helped West High to its best start since 2020.
The Trojans have lost just one game so far this season.
“We have a mission and we know what we’ve got to do to succeed,” Whitters said leading up to the matchup with Muscatine. “I think it starts with our captains. I think we’re trying to build culture. We’re trying to build (a) winning culture here. The last four years haven’t been great, probably since 2020. We’re trying to build back that culture. Last year put us back to where we should be. This year, we’re trying to go to where we need to be and want to be and know where we can be.”
