Thank you to Open Garden Weekend 2025 gardeners, sponsors, visitors and volunteers | LettersOn behalf of Project GREEN, we thank garden hosts, visitors, volunteers, business sponsors, and the many gardeners and friends who came out on a steamy summer weekend to make the Open Gardens Weekend 2025 the most successful yet. At least 2,000 people visited 20-plus beautiful gardens shared by our garden hosts. The event was free to the public due to our generous business sponsors. We are deeply grateful to the 23 garden hosts who braved the heat to share their gardens, as well as their enthusiasm and knowledge, with the public. We greatly appreciate the City of Iowa City, which has given Project GREEN Gardens a permanent base at the historic Ashton House, 820 Park Road. Project GREEN Gardens are open to the public year-round.OGW was modeled on the Buffalo, NY annual Garden Walk, which started small but over 30+ years has grown into a major event drawing tens of thousands of visitors from all over the US and Canada each year. It’s our hope OGW might have some of the same amazingly positive effects as theirs, even though our community is smaller.
Our founders had the vision in 1968 of enhancing public green spaces and preserving our local natural environment. This vision continues today as Project GREEN touches the lives of so many people through our nonprofit organization and affiliate partners. Our goal has remained the same throughout the 57 years of Project GREEN’s efforts: Invest in creating welcoming community environments, beautifying public spaces, employing conservation practices to preserve nature and the natural environment, and providing education opportunities that sustain a natural ecosystem.
We truly appreciate our committed and generous volunteers and the contributions of so many others who make our efforts so successful. This extraordinary support is a tribute to our community and all who believe in the mission of Project GREEN to make the Iowa City area an inviting and beautiful environment in which to live, work and play.
Diane Allen, Cindy Parsons and Beth Cody are Project GREEN Open Garden Weekend coordinators.
