After more than a decade in Iowa City, a downtown sweet treat staple is closing its doors.
Molly’s Cupcakes has made the “difficult decision” to close on Aug. 10, the shop announced in a Facebook post on Friday, July 11. The shop has served up cookies, pies, cakes, bars and cupcakes at its prominent Clinton Street location overlooking the University of Iowa campus for 13 years.
“Like many small businesses, we’ve faced mounting challenges in today’s economy, and while this chapter is ending, we know the memories (and sugar rushes) will live on,” the post said.
The post garnered hundreds of reactions and more than 60 replies in the first hour after the announcement. “So sad to hear this,” one commenter wrote. Another tagged two friends and simply wrote, “NOOOOOOOOOOO.”
Molly’s is a small sweets chain with 15 locations nationwide, including one other location in the state of Iowa in Des Moines. A majority of the cupcake shop’s locations are in Chicago.
The Iowa City location was the state’s first Molly’s and the first franchised location anywhere, according to a Facebook post. Iowa native Jamie Skinner worked at one of the Chicagoland locations before helping to deliver the state’s first location in its iconic spot at 14 S. Clinton Street in 2012.
“We hope you’ll come see us in the coming weeks to get your cupcake fill, share your stories, and let us say thank you,” the post concluded. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
