Carlisle girls basketball player Macy Comito and Dowling Catholic boys wrestler Jack Wallukait were voted the Des Moines Register’s metro-area female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of Jan. 4-10.
Comito won female Athlete of the Week with 61% of the vote.
She became the all-time leading scorer in Carlisle girls 5-on-5 basketball history during the Class 4A No. 5 Wildcats’ 67-26 victory over Winterset on Jan. 9 at Winterset.
Comito passed the old school record of 1,475 points held by Jordan Gronewold (2006-2010) after netting 22 points and adding seven assists and four steals against the Huskies. She also had 19 points and four steals during a 49-24 home win over Boone on Jan. 6.
Wallukait was voted male Athlete of the Week with 77% of the vote.
He went 4-0 to place first at 113 pounds during the Jack Mendenhall Invitational in Ames on Jan. 10.
Wallukait earned one win by technical fall and two pins to reach the finals at 113. In the championship round, he defeated James Morrison of Marmion Academy (Ill.) by a 7-2 decision.
