Lance Ingold: Film breakdown of Iowa football transfer portal DE

Over the past few seasons, the Iowa Hawkeyes have consistently put out one of the better defensive line units in the country. It has been a staple for Phil Parker’s elite defenses, and the success up front has opened up everything.

The 2025 season saw this unit dominate, but the departures of Aaron Graves, Ethan Hurkett, and Max Llewellyn have created opportunities for newcomers to etch their spot in the lineup. One new addition, Lance Ingold, a defensive end from Northern Illinois, comes to Iowa via the transfer portal, looking to make an impression.

Film Breakdown

Pros: The first thing you notice about Lance Ingold is his height. He is a lot like recent defensive ends for Iowa who have had success with being tall and lanky. It helps Phil Parker’s passing defense with the ability to get into passing lanes and plug up gaps for linebackers to fill in the run game. Minimal film exists on Ingold due to the lack of playing time, but his size is undeniable. Ingold can get his long arms on offensive linemen to quickly and easily disengage blocks in the run game, or get around the edge freely in the pass rush game once he fine-tunes his technique.

Cons: Lance Ingold is raw. He is going to need to develop a well-rounded game at Iowa. This isn’t a fault of how he plays or anything, simply a lack of reps at this point in his young career. With three years of eligibility, this is something Iowa can undoubtedly develop. Expect Iowa to add 10-15 pounds to Ingold in the weight room to provide some more size and a frame that can anchor down in the run game or set the edge.

Comparison: It is hard not to see a copy of Max Llewellyn in Lance Ingold. Llewellyn was a late bloomer, not hitting his stride until his third season. Have patience with Ingold and trust Iowa’s very proven developmental process.
