As Powerball surges toward a near-record jackpot, one Iowan came as close as you can get to winning the billion-dollar prize.
Iowa Lottery players won just more than 68,000 prizes amounting to $343,493 in the Sept. 3 Powerball drawing, according to a news release from the lottery. There are nine prize levels, ranging from $4 to the Powerball jackpot.
How close was an Iowa Lottery Powerball ticket to winning the jackpot?
One Powerball ticket purchased in Iowa was one number away from winning the jackpot. The ticket matched four of the first five numbers. While the person’s heart may have sunk at the news of the fifth digit, they still walked away with a $50,000 prize.
The one-digit-off ticket came from Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh at 912 N. Jefferson Way in Indianola.
What were the Powerball winning numbers?
The winning numbers for the Sept. 3 Powerball drawing were 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69. The red Powerball was 22, and the Power Play was 2x.
How much is the Powerball jackpot?
The jackpot is now estimated to be worth $1.7 billion, with a cash value of $770.3 million.

The next drawing is on Saturday, Sept. 6.
When is the latest you can buy a Powerball ticket?
Powerball tickets can be purchased until 8:59 p.m. on the evening of the drawing in Iowa, according to the Iowa Lottery. Drawings take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m.
