Des Moines resident William Melroy has died following injuries sustained from a residential fire in the Merle Hay Neighborhood, the Des Moines Police Department announced in a news release Wednesday.
Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Des Moines patrol officers and firefighters responded to an apartment building in the 3700 block of 57th Street in response to a fire in the building. Firefighters found Melroy, 63, inside his apartment.
Officials brought Melroy out from the fire and transported him in critical condition to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center. He was then flown to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center’s Burn Unit for advanced care, where he died overnight.
Following a preliminary investigation, officials do not believe the fire was intentionally started, the release said. The Des Moines Fire Department and Des Moines Police Department are continuing their investigation.
