A man died on Wednesday, May 13, after a fire in a downtown Des Moines apartment left him with critical injuries in late April.
Dennis Dean McNatt, 68, died from the injuries he sustained in a fire that is believed to have started accidentally in his apartment on the tenth floor of Elsie Mason Manor, 430 Grand Ave., on April 26. Des Moines police and firefighters responded to an alarm from the apartment around 3 a.m.
McNatt was left with critical burn injuries and was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the University of Iowa Healthcare Burn Treatment Center in Iowa City.
Despite the care he received at the burn center, he died from his injuries over two weeks after the fire, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek.
Detectives continue to investigate the fire, Parizek said.
