Billboard honors Iowa City’s Hancher Auditorium as indie powerhouse

Iowa City knows how to keep it “indie,” at least according to Billboard.

The University of Iowa’s multidisciplinary performing arts center, Hancher Auditorium, landed a spot on Billboard Magazine’s 2026 list of top music venues. The rankings identified 28 venues that “define the live-music experience today,” using both “editorial insight and hard data from Billboard Boxscore.”

Hancher Auditorium joins internationally known venues such as The Sphere in Las Vegas and the O2 in London, as well as festival locations such as Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

Executive director of Hancher Auditorium and UI’s Office of Performing Arts and Engagement, André Perry, said the Billboard honor emphasizes Hancher’s “teamwork” and the connection to Iowa City’s creative community.

“We see Hancher as an incubator for creativity and community at the university,” Perry said in a news release. “We are a source of arts, culture, and discovery. When you come here, you might be inspired to make art or have a breakthrough with a big idea or feel at home with new or old friends… So many experiences are possible at Hancher.”

What does Billboard believe makes Hancher special?

Hancher Auditorium lauded for capabilities, connection to community

Awarded with “Keeping it Indie,” Billboard says Hancher Auditorium is “a quiet powerhouse for indie touring in the Midwest,” crediting its balance of “concert hall precision and intimate energy,” along with acoustic and technical capabilities.

Hancher Auditorium established itself in the Iowa City music scene upon opening in October 1972. The original building was devastated by the 2008 flood. The facility was torn down and reopened in 2016, just north of its original location along the Iowa River at 141 Park Rd.

How many people does Hancher hold?

The main auditorium seats 1,800 while the smaller Strauss Hall hosts 200. The rebuilt building offers flexibility for a range of productions, from rock shows to ballets and orchestras.

Notable performances at Hancher Auditorium

Billboard applauds the notable artists Hancher Auditorium has attracted over the years, including American singer-songwriter Neko Case, who performed most recently at Mission Creek in 2024, and Jason Isbell, who is performing again in March after a 2023 stop.

Blues legend BB King, the Chicks, James Taylor, and Bruce Springsteen have also graced the Hancher stage, as has Nobel Peace Prize-winning author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.

Hancher hosts an annual Broadway Series and recently unveiled the “Stop/Time Festival,” a new two-day multidisciplinary arts event. The facility plans to host Bob Dylan, Ray LaMontagne, and the Grammy Award-winning jazz-fusion collective Snarky Puppy in the coming months.

What other Midwest music venues made Billboard Magazine’s list?

Hancher Auditorium joins the ranks of iconic rooms and venues such as Soldier Field and Garcia’s in Chicago, and the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee.
