A women’s a cappella chorus is good for body and mind | Music Column

On any given rehearsal night, a women’s a cappella chorus offers more than music. It offers belonging, confidence, friendship and the rare joy of creating something beautiful with nothing but human voices.

For women who love to sing — or who simply wonder whether they might — joining an a cappella chorus can be a powerful way to improve well-being. Group singing has been associated with better mood, reduced loneliness, stronger social bonds and improved quality of life. The benefits often begin with the first warm-up, when singers breathe together, listen closely and blend their individual voices into a shared sound.

Unlike accompanied singing, a cappella music depends entirely on the singers. There is no piano or backing track to hide behind. Each part matters. In a women’s chorus, that responsibility can become empowering: basses, leads, baritones and tenors learn to trust one another, hold their own notes and make beautiful music together.

The experience can also be good for the body. Singing encourages deep breathing, posture awareness and steady breath support. Rehearsals give singers a regular reason to stand tall, focus, laugh and use their lungs. Many singers describe leaving practice feeling lighter, calmer and more energized than when they arrived.

For some, chorus membership becomes a creative outlet after years of putting family, work or caregiving first. For others, it is a new adventure in retirement, a confidence boost after a life change, or a welcoming place to learn music without needing formal training. Many choruses provide learning tracks, section leaders and supportive coaching, making it possible for newcomers to grow at their own pace.

Metro Mix Chorus is a chorus of women of all ages from eastern Iowa who sing four-part harmony, a cappella music.  Now is a wonderful time to join us and feel the magic of making music together. Check out our web page (https://www.metromixchorus.org/) to learn more or visit Aug. 6, 13, or 20 at Shueyville Iowa Church.

Ellen Hanson joined Sweet Adelines International in 2009. She sings in Metro Mix Chorus and lives in Cedar Rapids.
