Marian's Prescott Horvath wins December 1-6 Tribune Athlete of the Week

Congratulations to Mishawaka Marian senior boys basketball player Prescott Horvath for winning the December 1-6 South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week poll! It is important to note that starting with this poll, votes were limited to one per hour.

Horvath received 1,507 votes, or 26.56% of the 5,673 total votes. Coming in second was New Prairie sophomore boys swimmer Noah Albert with 976 votes, or 17.2% of the poll.

The senior picked up his 100th career win Wednesday, December 3 in a meet against Otsego and Paw Paw.

Shaniyah Stout, Elkhart girls basketball

The senior reached 1,000 career points with 27 against South Bend Riley Friday, December 5. The Lions won 67-30. Stout had 12 in a 54-24 loss to Valparaiso Saturday, December 6.

Maverick Gates, Edwardsburg boys basketball

The senior led the Eddies with 28 points in their season-opening 63-51 win against Plainwell Friday night.

Levi Sawatzky, Goshen boys basketball

The senior put up 24 points in an 85-51 win against Washington Friday night, just a few days after leading the RedHawks with 15 points in a 51-41 victory against Marian Tuesday, December 2.

Will Spurgeon, Jimtown boys basketball

The senior Judson University commit led the Jimmies with 31 points in a 77-44 win against South Bend Career Academy Tuesday. He dropped 25 in a 69-66 loss to Culver Academies Saturday.

Griffin Ott-Large, La Porte boys basketball

The junior put up a 25-point, 10-assist double-double in the Slicers’ 60-44 win against Plymouth Friday. He contributed 11 points in a 57-37 win against New Prairie Saturday.

Marissa Pleasant, Marquette Catholic girls basketball

The junior led the Blazers with 19 points in a 61-55 win against Hammond Morton Tuesday, hitting five 3-pointers to reach 103 career 3-pointers made. That’s the fourth-most in program history.

Vaughn Rael-Kludt, Marquette Catholic boys basketball

The junior led the Blazers with 20 points in a 64-57 win against New Prairie Thursday, December 4 after dropping 18 points in a 61-55 loss to Victory Christian Academy Monday.

Prescott Horvath, Mishawaka Marian boys basketball

The senior led the way with 26 points in a 71-51 victory against Bishop Luers Saturday, after leading the Knights with 18 points in a loss to Goshen Tuesday.

Noah Albert, New Prairie boys swimming

The sophomore has 16 first-place finishes this season, and he brought in four more Saturday against Michigan City including one leg of the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay, and individually won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Against Elkhart Thursday, Albert won in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay, as well as individually in the 100-yard fly and breast stroke.

Brayden Favors, Niles boys basketball

The senior put up 30 points in a season-opening 81-62 loss to South Bend Adams Tuesday, then dropped 21 in a 74-28 win against Dowagiac Thursday and 25 in a 76-47 win over Three Rivers Friday.

Nylen Goins, Niles Brandywine boys basketball

The senior led the Bobcats to a 64-54 win against Pennfield with 30 points Saturday afternoon after dropping 13 in a 64-48 season-opening win against Coloma Tuesday.

Brady Scholl, Northridge boys basketball

The senior Indiana Wesleyan commit put up 32 points in the Raiders’ 61-42 win against Culver Academies Friday after scoring 19 against Westview in a 68-56 win Monday, December 1 before dropping 28 points in a 57-44 win against Valparaiso Saturday.

Erika Arpin, Northridge girls swimming

The freshman won all four events in which she competed against Plymouth and Goshen Thursday, including one leg of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay, and 100-yard breastroke and 200-yard medley individually.

Caleb Coolman, Penn boys basketball

The sophomore dropped 34 points in a 63-53 win against Fort Wayne Carroll in the Kingsmen’s season opener Friday night. He led Penn with 19 points in a 59-55 loss to Crown Point Saturday.

Lauren McGrath, Penn girls swimming

The junior won all four events she participated in against Marian Thursday, including one leg of the 200-yard medley and freestyle relay, and individually in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. She also won all four events she participated in against South Bend Washington and Northridge Wednesday, including one leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay, and the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke individually.

Addy Szakaly, South Bend Adams girls swimming

The senior University of Iowa commit won seven of eight races in which she competed this week either Monday against Mishawaka Marian or Thursday against New Prairie, including one leg of the 200-yard medley twice and 200-yard freestyle relay once, as well as individually winning the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and set a New Prairie natatorium record with a 58.37-second finish in the 100-yard backstroke.

Jarvis Tolbert, South Bend Adams boys basketball

The senior dropped 29 points in an 81-62 win against Niles Tuesday before putting up 20 in a 77-73 victory against Merrillville Saturday.

Colton Edman, South Bend Saint Joseph boys hockey

The junior put up five goals in a 5-4 win against South Bend Riley/Marian Wednesday.

Michael Stuckey, South Bend Washington boys basketball

The junior put up 26 points in the Panthers’ season-opening win against La Lumiere Regional Thursday before dropping 25 points against Goshen the next night.
