It’s officially the beginning of summer for Bloomingtonians — Indiana University graduation is over and a large portion of East Kirkwood Avenue is closed to vehicles.
That means it’s a great time to get out and try some of the restaurants, bakeries and other businesses that you’ve been avoiding due to crowds and difficulty finding parking. Most won’t require the reservations they did a month ago and there’s less of a crowd at the buffets and the breweries.
So, while you’re scheduling those summer vacations, consider taking a break from your kitchen and spending some time and money at local businesses. It’s summertime and that means if you want those places to still be in business when IU students return, you need to do your part. The best way to help out is by enjoying a latte, bagel, lunch or dessert at a local establishment.
Here’s a crazy idea: Try alphabet eating. Start at local restaurants with names beginning with A (Amrit, Ami, Aver’s) and proceed through B (Bub’s, Big Woods, Bloomington Bagel Co.), C (Crazy Horse, Chocolate Moose, China Wok) as far as you can this summer. Take some friends along and enjoy! Or try a new-then-old variation: Eat at a restaurant you’ve never tried and then visit one of your favorites.

The poll is open at heraldtimesonline.com through Sunday, May 18, and the results will be shared in next week’s column.
