Studebaker National Museum to host event about new book on Lafayette.

SOUTH BEND — Studebaker National Museum is celebrating the new book The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return, the Echoes of Revolution, and the Gratitude of the Republic by author and historian Ryan L. Cole on Thursday, June 11, during an event titled “The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Farewell Tour and the Carriage that Carried a Nation’s Memory.”

The event will begin with Cole’s telling of the “remarkable 1824–1825 grand tour in which the Marquis de Lafayette” returned to the United States, a press release said.

According to past Tribune reporting, Lafayette strongly believed in the American fight for independence against Great Britain and became a trusted general of first President George Washington. He fought in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777, camped with Washington at Valley Forge and commanded troops at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781.

At 67 years old, Lafayette returned to the U. S. from France because of an invitation from President James Monroe in 1824 for a farwell tour of “all 24 states of the young republic.”

Museum curator Kyle Sater will share the story behind one of the carriages used during Lafayette’s tour, part of the museum’s permanent collection.

After both talks, there will be a question-and-answer session, light refreshments and an opportunity to explore the rest of the museum.

The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. June 11 at 897 Thomas St. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Admission to the event is free, but the museum asks those that are interested in attending to register online.
