In the early going of the 2025 season, what has Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen seen from quarterback Anthony Richardson in his new backup role?
“He’s doing good,” Steichen said. “He’s been real good throughout the week. Preparing the right way. Still developing the fundamentals, technique on the practice field, getting those reps on scout team and locked in. Like I said, he’s one play away.”
When Steichen made the decision in late August that Daniel Jones would be the starter, he noted the strides that Richardson had made this summer, but also that more development was needed. Ultimately, Richardson still wasn’t consistent enough.
GM Chris Ballard would add that Richardson has “come miles” since being drafted by the Colts and that every player’s development timeline is different.
Ballard also mentioned that having the opportunity to develop without all eyes being on him could be beneficial for his growth.
The Colts have made it clear publicly that they do not intend to trade Richardson and that the organization still believes in him. However, realistically, the path forward for Richardson to be the team’s long-term option at quarterback is incredibly murky.
