When you sell your home, a private space becomes public as strangers see inside every corner, both online and in person.
Indianapolis artist Adam Stoner has experienced that more than most, as his listing has gone viral with more than 100,000 views on Zillow and countless posts and comments online. And when it comes to real estate and art, as they say, everyone’s a critic.
“What was once my creative environment is now everyone else’s experience,” Stoner said. “So until we sell, it’s more like a hotel now, which I didn’t expect.”
Responding to the critics
Stoner, owner of the Salt House Tattoo in Franklin and a media personality with a popular YouTube show and podcast, has handled the online criticism with grace and humor.
Stoner discussed the viral listing on his YouTube show, explaining his love for the home and his understanding that everyone’s style is unique while adding his signature brand of humor. He laughingly read several of the negative comments, like “100 percent a magician lived here,” before taking his viewers on an MTV Cribs-style tour of the home to show what makes it perfect for him and, hopefully, a buyer.
“Honestly, it’s not been fun,” Stoner told IndyStar of the negative online comments. “I think that’s why I’ve been having so much fun with it online. People that are rude don’t expect me to joke back.”
What inspired the style?
We talked to Stoner about what inspired his vision for the home, listed for $1.399M, with gleaming black and white epoxy floors, Chinese temple doors circa the 1500s and more.
“I like to make every environment I have an environment that inspires me,” he said. “Being a tattoo artist, I need to feel creative in every corner of my life in order to give my clients my best. My shop, the ‘Salt House,’ is a Victorian dark history private tattoo studio complete with gold and old. So when I come home, I want the silver side of the coin.”
The massive home has more than 8,500 sq ft, 5 bedrooms, 5 1/2 baths, a resort-style pool, a recording studio and a 9-seat movie theatre. With all that space, we asked Stoner about his favorite feature.
“Everyone that comes over loves the movie theater. Hands down for me, my recording studio,” he said. “That’s where I live most of the time, making music, documentaries, my show, designing tattoos and more.”
While Stoner waits for the home to sell, the main takeaway seems to be to ignore the noise and do what makes you happy, especially when it comes to your own home.
“Decorating the way we did allowed us to be on vacation every day.”
