SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame baseball starting pitcher Rory Fox headlined a modest two-player draft class for the Irish in this year’s MLB Draft.
A right-hander, Fox went to the New York Yankees in the sixth round with the 194th overall pick. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound rising senior from Wakesha, Wis., showed marked improvement in the spring for a youthful Irish team that fell short of securing a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Fox went 4-4 with a 3.58 ERA in 14 starts as a junior. In 65 1/3 innings, Fox allowed just 44 hits (three home runs) and a .187 opponents’ batting average.
The Seattle Mariners tabbed Irish shortstop Estevan Moreno in the 20th and final round. Coming off a breakout 2024 campaign, Moreno sagged to a .230 average with 10 homers and 43 RBI in the spring.
Moreno had a .339 on-base percentage, a team-high 72 strikeouts, and committed a team-high 14 errors in the field. Moreno went 602nd overall as the 2025 draft concluded Monday.
The Atlantic Coast Conference had six players taken in the top 43 overall picks. Five different programs produced first-round selections.
Florida State left-hander Jamie Arnold went 11th overall to the Oakland A’s; Wake Forest shortstop Marek Houston went 16th to the Minnesota Twins; Wake Forest outfielder Ethan Conrad went 17th to the Chicago Cubs; Louisville right-hander Patrick Forbes went 29th to the Arizona Diamondbacks; North Carolina catcher Luke Stevenson went 35th to the Seattle Mariners and Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella went 43rd to the Miami Marlins.
