CARMEL – Playing without junior point guard Jahari Miller, Pike coach Jeff Teague knew he would need strong performances from his other guards in a top-10 showdown against Carmel.
He got it.
Junior Bo Washington came off the bench to score 10 points, including a clutch free throw to tie the game with 0.6 seconds remaining, to help propel Class 4A No. 7 Pike to a 61-55 overtime win over Carmel.
“Bo is a chill dude,” Teague said. “I gave him crap about missing one of them but he made one and give us a chance to into overtime and win the game. That’s the player Bo is. He’s not scared of the moment at all.”
Miller, who suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s Marion County Tournament championship overtime loss to Lawrence North, said he should be back next week for the Red Devils’ game against Zionville. Senior Ian Macon slid into the starting spot in his place and finished with seven points, six assists and no turnovers.
The star of the night for Pike (13-3) was 6-6 sophomore Landon Lampley, who finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting. He scored the first four points of overtime to help the Red Devils take control for good.
“What can you say about Landon?” Teague said. “He was special tonight. He made big shots. That’s a good team over there (Carmel). That’s the Landon I hope to see. He’s still a sophomore and has so much more room to grow, but as you can see, he is dynamic. He can get to the basket, he can make plays. I’m not going to depend on him to do that every night because he’s a sophomore, but he’s a really good player.”
Another guard, senior T.J. Davis, went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in overtime to help Pike salt it away.
Carmel (10-2) lost for the second Friday in a row after falling 50-47 to fifth-ranked Plainfield last week at home. The Greyhounds got a huge night from senior Evan Harrell, who finished with a game-high 22 points on 11-for-18 shooting.
In a back-and-forth game, Carmel took a 48-45 lead on a 3-pointer by Julian Vogt with 1:12 left in regulation. Davis answered with an old fashioned three-point play with 58 seconds remaining. Carmel, playing for the last shot, got to the free-throw line when point guard Cash Daniels was fouled with 4.5 seconds remaining. Daniels made the second of two, giving Carmel a 49-48 lead.
The last 4.5 seconds of regulation were anything but ordinary.
After both teams called a timeout, Teague called for a play where one Pike player passed to another out of bounds to get a better angle on an inbounds pass to the 6-11 Hill around midcourt. But twice, the referee blew the whistle and stopped the play because the clock did not start on the initial pass to a player standing out of bounds.
On the third attempt, Hill pushed ahead to Washington, who was fouled with 0.6 seconds remaining.
“That’s a tough one,” Carmel coach Ryan Osborn said. “We got them right where we wanted them to a side of the floor. We wanted to help in the gaps and make them shoot a jump shot, which we did. Tough one.”
Vogt finished with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the 3-point line. Carmel has lost two of three with a tough stretch upcoming at Ben Davis (Jan. 30), vs. Fishers (Jan. 31) and vs. Lawrence North (Feb. 5).
“Our guys stuck with it and got some good looks,” Osborn said. “They are right there. These are tough games. They can’t discourage you and take the wind out of your sails. You’ve got to come back and learn and see what we need to do collectively to be a little better going into March. They shot 51 percent from the floor and shot 15 free throws. We shot two. That’s been the case the last couple games. We have to be more aggressive, set our defense and make things a little tougher.”
