Indiana's gas tax cut will save you money. Our tool tells you how much

Indiana drivers are about to finally find some relief at the gas pump. But how much?

The relief stems from Gov. Mike Braun’s announcement on April 8 to suspend Indiana’s gas usage tax for the following 30 days. The move comes as experts say prices could continue to surge because of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war in Iran.

The suspension will save Indiana drivers 17.2 cents per gallon over the next month — a number calculated by the Indiana Department of Revenue by multiplying the average before-tax retail price of a gallon of fuel by 7%. A federal gas tax and the state excise tax will remain in effect.

The suspension does not apply to diesel, Braun said.

Braun estimated that the 30-day suspension will save Hoosiers $50 million, and said it can be extended if necessary. The May 2026 gas usage tax will be published by April 22.

What will the suspended tax mean for your budget, exactly? Here’s a tool to help you figure that out.
