A 9-year-old boy was killed and a man was severely injured in a weekend all-terrain vehicle accident near New Boston, Indiana, in Spencer County.
Dispatchers directed the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office and other area law enforcement agencies to the scene of the deadly incident not far from the intersection of East County Road 1150 North and North County Road 1200 East around 7:50 p.m. Saturday.
Responding deputies located a lone three-wheel ATV wrecked off of the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials have not publicly stated what may have caused the crash.
“Both occupants – an adult male and a 9-year-old boy – had been ejected from the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office stated in a news release Monday. “Spencer County EMS and other first responders provided immediate medical care. Despite their efforts, the young boy tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
The Spencer County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was scheduled for Sunday in nearby Vanderburgh County. The authorities have not released the boy’s name.
The adult was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital with “severe injuries,” the sheriff’s office stated. Officials have not stated who was driving the ATV at the time of the crash.
Neither the boy nor the adult were wearing helmets, according to investigators.
“The Spencer County Coroner’s Office extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and community affected by this loss,” the agency stated in a weekend news release. “The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available, per privacy and legal considerations.”
