Cleveland Road, near University Park Mall, closed Tuesday as police evacuate for gas leak

Homes and businesses along Cleveland Road — in the area between Ironwood and Hickory roads — are being evacuated Thursday morning due to a gas leak. People are asked to avoid the scene.

The St. Joseph County Police Department reported that an eight-inch gas line was struck at the 17000 block of Cleveland Road around 8 a.m., July 15, across the street from Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel. The department, along with Clay Fire Territory, is working to evacuate homes and businesses in the area, as Cleveland Road between Ironwood and Hickory roads is closed, police said in an app notification at 8:15 a.m.

Police alerted residents that other roads in the area may also be closing.

The department reported that Northern Indiana Public Service Company arrived on the scene. The Tribune reached out to NIPSCO July 15 for a comment on the situation.
