3 Takeaways from Colts' training camp practice No. 10: Good and bad at QB

Following their preseason game against Baltimore on Thursday, the Indianapolis Colts were back on the practice field on Saturday, and out there was quarterback Anthony Richardson, who exited the opener with a dislocated finger.

This practice was a bit shorter, but with help from those who were in attendance, here are three takeaways from what took place.

How did the Colts’ QBs Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones perform?

The emphasis during Saturday’s practice was in the red zone. According to Jake Arthur of Horseshoe Huddle, it was an efficient day for Jones, who was 5-for-6 passing. As Arthur notes, this period played into Jones’ strengths, with a lot of short, quick, rhythmic throws in this part of the field.

Richardson, who practiced just days after dislocating his pinkie, had a tough showing. By Arthur’s count, he was just 1-for-6 during the 11-on-11 period in the red zone.

AD Mitchell does it again

It’s now becoming the norm for Mitchell in these training camp practices, but he put together another very good day, which included hauling in four touchdown passes between the 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 periods.

“Arrow’s pointing up,” said wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne. “I think everything’s hitting right on time. We just gotta make sure we stay consistent and do everything that we supposed to do. Try not to free-style as much, he know that.”

Opportunities at cornerback

Justin Walley is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents remain sidelined with hamstring injuries. Against the Ravens, Alex Johnson was one of the starters at outside cornerback. During Saturday’s practice, undrafted rookie Johnathan Edwards got those snaps.

In Arthur’s camp takeaways article, he noted that Edwards had an impressive pass breakup against Alec Pierce.

Along with Edwards and Johnson competing for those starting snaps opposite of Charvarius Ward, so is Samuel Womack, who started in the preseason game and in Saturday’s practice as well.

“Next man up,” defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said Saturday, via Colts.com. “That’s this league. Nobody feels sorry for us that we lost (Walley), and you know the game’s gonna come when it comes, regardless. So that’s why we just gotta keep bringing the next guy along, getting him ready. The next guy’s gotta step up and be big, and we expect there to be no drop off.”
