2025 Indianapolis Colts roster preview: RB Tyler Goodson

With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Indianapolis Colts’ 91-man roster.

Going alphabetically, up next is running back Tyler Goodson.

2024 Season Review

Goodson was the third running back on the Colts’ depth chart last season. When given an opportunity, he was productive, averaging 4.8 yards per rush on 32 carries for the year with one rushing touchdown.

He also caught 11-of-14 targets in the passing game with one touchdown, but averaged just 5.5 yards per catch.

Along with his contributions on offense, Goodson had nine kick return attempts as well, averaging 26.3 yards per return, which league-wide ranked 39th.

Despite Goodson’s efficiency with the ball in his hands, there must have been some sort of disconnect somewhere because, as mentioned, he finished the year with only 32 touches, which were 24 fewer than Trey Sermon, who averaged just 2.8 yards per rush.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

The running back room behind Jonathan Taylor has been reshaped this offseason, with GM Chris Ballard signing Khalil Herbert and drafting DJ Giddens. Goodson will be competing with both for snaps and a roster spot.

At the NFL combine, Ballard said that more production was needed behind Taylor this season, so considering that Goodson was a part of that secondary unit with Sermon in 2024, I tend to think that, at least right now, Goodson is the odd man out.

With that said, it’s important to note that Herbert isn’t a roster lock. If released, his dead cap hit is only $482,500, per Over the Cap.
