CDC reports Illinois among states with most deadly fungus cases

A drug-resistant fungus called candida auris, or C. auris, is spreading across the United States, with cases rising each year since 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CDC data shows more than 3,000 cases have been reported in the U.S. so far in 2026, with many centered in the Midwest and South. Illinois is among the nationwide hotspots, following just behind Texas and Michigan.

Here’s what Illinois residents should know about the fungus and how it spreads.

What is candida auris?

Candida auris is a type of yeast that can cause serious infections in humans most commonly via their bloodstream or wounds, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The yeast can live on the skin or another body part without making a person sick in a process called colonization, which increases the risk of infection. Both those who have active infections and colonization are capable of transmitting the yeast to others.

Is candida auris fatal?

The yeast can cause death, particularly in hospital patients and nursing home residents with serious medical problems, according to the IDPH. More than a third of individuals with invasive infections (affecting the blood, heart or brain) die.

What are symptoms of candida auris?

Symptoms of candida auris vary depending on the location and severity of the infection, according to the CDC. Though the symptoms may resemble those caused by bacterial infections, such as fever or chills, the CDC says there’s no common set of symptoms among candida auris infections.

How many candida auris cases in Illinois?

The CDC reported that Illinois had 366 cases of candida auris as of July 18, making it among the states with the most cases.

Which states have the most candida auris cases?

The following states had the most reported cases as of July 18, according to the CDC:

The infection is commonly spread onto surfaces and objects in healthcare settings, such as bedrails, doorknobs and blood pressure cuffs, according to the CDC. The yeast can survive on surfaces and objects, as well as on skin or body parts, for a long time regardless of whether the individual has an active infection.

The IDPH recommends the following tips for those with an active infection or colonization and their loved ones:
