'A fun ride': Farmington basketball coach retires, mentions potential successor

CHILLICOTHE — Marty Lozier has called it a career.

The Farmington boys basketball coach announced his retirement following Tuesday’s 71-41 sectional semifinal loss to Warsaw West Hancock at the Chillicothe Sectional. Lozier has been a part of the Farmington program for the last 16 years, including the last five as head coach.

“It’s been a fun ride, though,” Lozier told the Journal Star, fighting back tears. “This group (was) special to me and they’re good guys. I’ll miss them. I’m ready to retire.”

During his half-decade at the Farmers’ helm, Lozier, who is the president of Lozier Oil Company, led Farmington to a pair of Class 2A regional titles (2022, 2026). He posted four winning seasons and 86 victories following his hiring prior to the 2021-2022 season.

In that first season, he led Farmington to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to eventual fourth-place state finisher Taylor Ridge Rockridge in the sectional championship. That was Farmington’s first regional championship since a 2007 Class A fourth-place finish.

Lozier, a 1982 Farmer grad, was named to the 10-player 1982 Journal Star All-Suburban team. He averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists during his senior campaign.

According to Lozier, his likely successor is assistant coach Tyler Southwood, who won 136 games over 14 seasons at Havana. Southwood stepped down from Havana after the 2024-25 when he was hired as the Farmington Junior High student success coordinator and to work under Lozier.
