Astronaut, Melbourne and Bayside qualified for the FHSAA boys state bowling championship last season as teams.
The War Eagles led the trio, reaching the state final with one of their members — James McGill — winning the individual state title.
Merritt Island Christian and Viera each featured an individual state qualifier.
Here’s what to watch for during the 2026 boys bowling season.
Teams to watch
Astronaut High
Astronaut won the District 6 title last season to qualify for its third state tournament. The War Eagles dropped the opening match, but they battled back to win seven straight elimination matches, win the consolation bracket and push Seabreeze to a winner-take-all championship match. In Astronaut’s first state title appearance since 2020, Seabreeze prevailed 3-2 in the final.
McGill, who returns for his senior season, became Astronaut’s first individual state bowling champion in school history after winning all five bracket matches following a qualifying total of 966. Senior Lincoln Moyer joined McGill in the bracket with a 901 qualifying total and placed seventh following a 2-2 run to the consolation fourth round. Joseph Gardner tied for 36th, Alex Porter finished 102nd and Isaac Miller ended in 141st in individual qualifying.
Melbourne High
Melbourne punched its ticket to state for the first time since 2021 after finishing as the District 5 runner-up last year. The Bulldogs posted a 2-2 record and fell in the consolation fourth round.
Melbourne senior Zachary Forcier bowled a qualifying round of 883 to earn a spot in the bracket. The senior lost both matches for a placement of 14th. Bulldogs senior Ethan Griffa tied for 25th in individual qualifying. Sebastian Gerace and Sawyer Davenport placed 39th and 70th, respectively. Isaiah Ayala rounded out the team with a tie of 90th.
Bayside High
For the seventh time in school history, Bayside qualified for the state tournament after winning the District 5 title in 2025. The Bears dropped both matches at state, losing 3-0 to Windermere in the first round and 3-2 against Northeast St. Petersburg in the consolation second round.
Cayden Sylvester posted the highest individual qualifying score on Bayside, bowling an 855 for 21st overall. Dryzden Ramsay and Braylon Adkins finished back-to-back at 92nd and 93rd, respectively. Dreyden Ramsay placed 97th and Cole Spors ended in 122nd.
Bowlers to watch
Carson Espling, Sr., Viera
Espling became Viera’s first state bowling qualifier since 2018 last season after claiming the top individual qualifying score in District 5, where he scored 720. The senior bowled a 661 at state for a placement of 126th.
Tommy Hausmann, Sr., Merritt Island Christian
Last season, Hausmann became the first state qualifier from Merritt Island Christian in three years when Saul Van Horn placed 98th. The senior earned his spot at state as the final individual qualifier out of District 5 with a score of 681. Hausmann bowled 840 to tie for 30th at state.
