What could Ted Hurst produce for the Bucs as a rookie?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expecting third-round rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst to immediately add something their offense has been missing: true size on the outside. At 6’4″ and 206 pounds, Hurst enters the league with the physical frame and catch radius Tampa Bay suddenly lacked after losing Mike Evans in free agency.

Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has already indicated the rookie is expected to operate primarily as the offense’s true X receiver, allowing Emeka Egbuka to slide more naturally into the Z-role where his route-running ability and versatility can be maximized. That alignment could allow Hurst to carve out a meaningful role much earlier than most third-round rookie receivers.

The Buccaneers are expected to use Hurst heavily in vertical boundary routes where his size and physicality can become major assets for Baker Mayfield. Tampa Bay also figures to feature him in tough contested catch situations, particularly inside the red zone, where his frame can give Baker Mayfield a large target to operate and draw attention with.

While rookie receivers often face adjustment periods adapting to NFL route timing and physical coverage, Hurst’s skill set gives him a pathway to immediate situational production even while continuing to refine the finer details of his game. A realistic rookie stat line for Hurst could land somewhere around 48 to 62 receptions, 650 to 850 receiving yards, and five to eight touchdowns. That is, if he is used right away, as many anticipate. Those numbers would represent a highly productive rookie season for a third-round receiver in an offense that already features multiple established weapons and felt like it had too many mouths to feed, at times. The biggest adjustment for Hurst will likely come in creating consistent separation against NFL-caliber press coverage.

While his size and ball skills are already apparent, the level of talent he played against at Georgia State raises the question of whether he will have the same success in the pros.
