Two people struck by vehicles on I-95 in Brevard, including woman who stopped to help

Two people were struck — one man, fatally — by vehicles on Interstate 95 overnight in Brevard County in a chain reaction of crashes involving multiple vehicles.

Florida Highway Patrol said the first crash, at 12:08 a.m., involved a 2019 Chevy Impala and a 2024 Volkswagen. Both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-95 just south of State Road 46. The Chevy Impala was in the center lane, and the Volkswagen, in the outside lane. Florida Highway Patrol said the Chevy’s driver, a 33-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, shifted to the outer lane, moving into the path of the other vehicle and causing the front right of the Chevy to collide with the rear left of the Volkswagen.

The impact sent the Volkswagen veering off the roadway into a ditch, while the Chevy slammed into the inside shoulder and struck the concrete median.

The Chevy’s driver exited the vehicle, where he was struck by the driver of a 2025 Hyundai Elantra attempting to avoid the crash. That impact caused the man who had exited his vehicle to be thrown into the inside lane, where he was struck by another vehicle, a 2019 Audi.

A 27-year-old woman from Dallas, North Carolina, stopped to try to help and was struck herself by the driver of a fifth vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Murano, even as both tried to avoid the collision, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Port St. Lucie man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the initial crash, a 45-year-old man from Weston, was transported to Parrish Medical Center with minor injuries. The North Carolina woman who stopped to help was airlifted to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital in critical but stable condition. The other drivers and their passengers were not injured.

Florida Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
