The Florida Highway Patrol responded to two separate tragic accidents in Wakulla County that left two Crawfordville men fighting for their lives and a baby with minor injuries after she was ejected from a vehicle.
Around 4:07 p.m. Tuesday, Troopers say a sport utility vehicle veered off the north shoulder of Shadeville Highway (CR-61) east of Atkinson Road overturned before striking a concrete church sign and several trees. The 25-year-old driver, a man from Crawfordville who was not wearing a seatbelt, remained inside the vehicle after the crash.
A baby girl, just under 11 months old and secured in a car seat, was ejected from the vehicle onto the north shoulder. She was transported by ambulance to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The driver was airlifted to TMH in critical condition.
The crash closed Shadeville Highway for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded. The Florida Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and Fire Rescue.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
Less than three hours earlier, a 59-year-old Crawfordville man was critically injured after being struck by a truck while crossing US-319 (Crawfordville Highway) near Hickory Avenue.
FHP troopers say the incident happened at approximately 1:26 p.m. as the pedestrian was walking eastbound across US-319 from Hudson Park. For reasons still under investigation, the man walked into the path of a southbound truck driven by a 54-year-old man from McDonough, Georgia. The truck’s front bumper collided with the pedestrian in the roadway.
The pedestrian was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. His next of kin have been notified.
