Top 8 concerts this week in Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Englewood

We say goodbye to January and hello to February this week, with notable concerts each month, including a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter playing both.

The former frontman of a Grammy-nominated rock band also visits us this week, along with a Canadian acoustic/roots group, a Taiwanese ukulele prodigy, a “traveling circus power pop collective from Miami/Gainesville/Birmingham,” and a Southern rocker formerly from Sarasota. Two local concert series also make their return, one featuring a musician who used to play in a band with the sadly recently departed Bob Weir, another featuring up-and-coming musical acts and free admission for students. Here are this week’s highlights. Event details are subject to change.

The Andrew Collins Trio

Sarasota venue Fogartyville’s live music lineup this week will include a concert by Canadian acoustic/roots group Andrew Collins Trio on Friday. “Mando maestro” Collins — who along with mandolin can play fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello — has earned five Juno Award (Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys) nominations both under his own name and with groups including the Creaking Tree String Quartet.

His namesake trio also features guitarist/mandolinist/vocalist Adam Shier and bassist/mandocellist/vocalist James McEleney, and just released the new album “Retro” earlier in January. 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show Friday; Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota; $25, $20 members, $13 students ages 13 and up; 941-894-6469; fogartyville.org

Chris Anderson Band

Guitarist, singer-songwriter and Sarasota native Chris Anderson will be back in the area this week for a show at Sarasota County restaurant and venue Englewoods on Dearborn. Anderson is a former member of Tampa-formed Southern rockers Outlaws of “Green Grass and High Tides” and “There Goes Another Love Song” fame.

He also released the 1995 solo album “Old Friend,” whose title track co-penned with Warren Haynes was later recorded by The Allman Brothers Band as the final song on their final studio album, 2003’s “Hittin’ the Note.” 7 p.m. Friday; Englewoods on Dearborn, 362 W. Dearborn St., Englewood; $10; 941-475-7501; englewoodsondearborn.com

Mary Gauthier

Grammy-nominated folk singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier will return to Fogartyville for another two nights of shows. Releasing albums since the late ’90s and earning particular acclaim for 2005’s “Mercy Now” (with its tracks “I Drink” and “Wheel Inside the Wheel” covered by Blake Shelton and Jimmy Buffett, respectively), Gauthier most recently released 2022’s “Dark Enough to See the Stars.”

The album was the follow-up to 2018’s “Rifles & Rosary Beads,” which Gauthier co-wrote with U.S. veterans and their families and earned her first Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Fellow singer-songwriter Jaimee Harris will join Gauthier both nights. 6 p.m. doors, 7 p.m. show Saturday and Sunday; Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota; currently sold out; 941-894-6469; fogartyville.org

Feng E

Venice music store and venue Troll Music will host a concert by Taiwanese teen ukulele virtuoso Feng E on Sunday. Initially gaining attention when he was 10 years old for a rendition of “Classical Gas” (later performing the song with Tommy Emmanuel live), Feng E went on to appear on shows such as “America’s Got Talent” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Feng E’s YouTube channel currently has more than 750,000 subscribers, with videos of other ukulele song covers such as Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” and Sia’s “Chandelier” amassing millions of views. 5:30 p.m. Sunday; Troll Music, 628 E. Venice Ave., Venice; currently sold out; 941-484-8765; trollmusic.com

John Kadlecik

The Music Monday series at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre, where the downtown Sarasota comedy club switches things up by hosting concerts, will feature a return appearance by John Kadlecik this week. The musician is a co-founder of the popular Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra that formed in 1997.

He would later join two original Dead members, the recently departed Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, in the group Furthur that played together from 2009 to 2014. 7 p.m. Monday; McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota; $87; 941-925-3869; mccurdyscomedy.com

Insignificant Other

Bradenton cafe and venue Oscura will welcome Insignificant Other, a self-described “traveling circus power pop collective from Miami/Gainesville/Birmingham,” for a concert Tuesday. Local fans of emo, indie and punk may have previously seen the band when they opened for D.C.’s Origami Angel and Tallahassee’s Pool Kids at The Orpheum in Tampa in late 2022.

Insignificant Other — whose releases include the 2019 album “i’m so glad i feel this way about you” and last year’s single “In Parking Lots” — headline this show, with Ending Apathy and RiskAverse opening. 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show Tuesday; Oscura, 816 Manatee Ave. E., Bradenton; free/pay-what-you-want ages 21 and up, $10 under age 21; oscura.live

Josey Scott

Oscura’s live music lineup this week will also include Josey Scott, the former and founding lead singer of hard rock band Saliva. Scott played with the group from 1996 to 2011, a period that included 2001’s platinum-selling album “Every Six Seconds,” which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and songs such as “Click Click Boom,” the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy-nominated “Your Disease” and the Billboard Modern Rock No. 1 hit “Always.”

Scott also collaborated with Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger on the song “Hero” from the 2002 blockbuster “Spider-Man.” DONEFOR and Indebted will open the show. 7 p.m. doors, 7:30 p.m. show Wednesday; Oscura, 816 Manatee Ave. E., Bradenton; $25 advance, $30 day of; oscura.live

Ringling Underground

Ringling Underground, the concert series held in The Ringling’s courtyard featuring up-and-coming artists and free admission for students, will return for its latest installment. Headlining will be South Florida rock group Rehash, which started as two high schoolers making music in a bedroom and has now become a four-piece with nearly 700,000 currently monthly Spotify listeners and multiple albums to their name, most recently last year’s “mock.”

Bradenton punks Spanish Bombs and Sarasota/Tampa experimental rock band my dead roommate also perform. 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5; The Ringling, 5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota; $15, free students with ID/members, 941-359-5700; ringling.org
