Study shows top cities for tree huggers in the US. Here's where Gainesville ranks

The city of Gainesville is among the top destinations for tree huggers in the U.S., according to a study by Lawn Love, an online business that connects residents with lawn care and landscaping services across the country.

The study looked at metrics such as tree canopy percentage, tree canopy coverage, the number of public gardens, urban tree initiatives, and average annual rainfall.

Gainesville came in at 17th on the list out of nearly 500 cities. It ranked second overall in the number of urban tree initiatives, 12th in tree canopy percentage and 16th for its commitment to the Tree City USA program.

Other Florida cities among the top 100 on the list include Tallahassee (40), Palm Coast (58), Daytona Beach (67), North Port (71) and St. Petersburg (99).

Topping the list is Nashville, Tennessee, which ranks first in tree canopy coverage and eighth in urban tree initiatives. Columbus, Georgia came in second. Four of the top 10 cities on the list are in Georgia, including Atlanta (3), Athens (5) and Roswell (10)

Portland, Oregon, is the only city west of the Mississippi River to make the top 25.

Cities in Nevada — Reno, North Las Vegas and Sparks — occupy three of the final five spots at bottom of the list.
