After a thrilling 42-7 win that saw Florida State snap its 406-day no ACC win streak, ESPN’s Football Power Index has smiled upon the Seminoles for the first time in a long time.
ESPN’s Football Power Index is released daily and is meant to assess a team’s overall performance as it pertains to its potential. According to ESPN, it measures “a team’s true strength on net points scale; expected point margin vs average opponent on neutral field.”
Last week, Florida State was ranked No. 30 out of 136 FBS teams; they are now up to the No. 24 team in the rankings following Week 10. They are between the No. 23 Washington Huskies, who are 6-2 and ranked within the AP Top 25, and the No. 25 Florida Gators, who are 3-5. The Seminoles’ FPI rose to 11.4.
By ESPN’s own predictions, they are expecting the Seminoles to get 6.5 wins. They also predict that FSU now has an 86.9% chance of getting to bowl eligibility, but no chance of making either the ACC Championship or College Football Playoff. Finishing 9-4 is still very much within the realm of possibility.
On the other hand, the No. 136 spot still belongs to the UMass Minutemen after their bye week, and a 38-13 loss to Central Michigan dropped them to 0-8 on the season. Their FPI now sits at -25.9, a full two points or so behind No. 135, the Sam Houston State Bearkats, who are also 0-8.
The Seminoles will look to continue their good fortune when they travel to Death Valley to take on their bitter rival, the Clemson Tigers, on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. The game will air on the ACC Network.
