Ryan Reid, beloved ex-Florida State Seminoles basketball player, dies at 38

Former Florida State men’s basketball player Ryan Reid has died following a medical emergency, according to multiple reports.

Reid, 38, played for Leonard Hamilton from 2006-2010, helping every FSU team he played on reach the postseason, with two NCAA tournament and two NIT appearances. He played professionally for nine years, most recently for Kanazawa Samuraiz in Japan.

He was a four-star recruit and top-100 prospect before playing four seasons at FSU, where he scored 624 points and recorded 490 rebounds. Reid, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward, averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and earned a reputation as a high-level defender and teammate.

In the 2010 NBA Draft, Reid was selected by the Indiana Pacers in the second round and traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He also played professionally in France, Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan.

Reid was in attendance for Hamilton’s final game at the Tucker Center in March.

He played with new FSU head coach Luke Loucks, who released a statement on his personal X, formerly Twitter, account in memory of what he described as a “mountain of a man.”

“Ryan was more than just a great basketball player — he was a great competitor, a trusted teammate, a natural leader, a devoted husband, and a loving father. He was a mountain of a man, both in stature and in spirit — always standing tall for the people he cared about,” Loucks wrote on X.

“His personality filled every room, his sense of humor lifted every moment, and his presence made us all better — on and off the court. I’ll forever be grateful for the battles we shared, the laughs we had, and the memories we built together.”

“You’ll be deeply missed, Ryan. Your legacy lives on through the lives you touched and the love you gave. No words make your passing easier, but your life will be celebrated by your friends, your family, and your fans.”
