ORMOND BEACH — A pedestrian walking on the shoulder of State Road 40 just west of Interstate 95 was killed Friday, February 6, after being hit by a pickup.
About 6 p.m. Friday, a 32-year-old Ormond Beach man was walking westbound on the eastbound outside paved shoulder of State Road 40 just west of Booth Road, which is near Calvary Christian Center.
A 2021 Ford F-550 pickup, driven by a 44-year-old Daytona Beach man, was traveling eastbound on State Road 40 approaching Booth Road in the outside lane, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP: Pickup driver thought he hit animal, then drove home
The pickup driver drifted from the outside lane onto the outside paved shoulder, and the right front side of the truck struck the pedestrian, according to the report.
The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision, the pickup driver stopped briefly in a nearby parking lot. The driver later told a Florida Highway Patrol investigator that he thought he struck an animal in the road and then drove home.
The truck was taken into evidence, and the crash remains under investigation.
