Moisture in the Gulf will bring rain to Volusia-Flagler, but how much?

A low-pressure trough in the Gulf is expected to bring a lot of moisture and increasingly inclement weather to Volusia and Flagler counties during the rest of the week, according to the forecast.

The likely showers and thunderstorms have a 50% chance of starting May 27, and those chances increase daily into the weekend.

In east Central Florida, rainfall tallies until May 31 could amount to between 1 and 2.5 inches, with “with a 10-20% chance of exceeding 3 (inches),” according to the National Weather Service.

And while the rain can help alleviate some of the drought conditions in the area, “localized flooding may occur from repeated storms” over the next few days, the agency added.

Here is what Volusia and Flagler residents can expect.

Volusia County weather: When will it rain this week?

While the rain starts making its way over the area on May 27, deeper moisture levels surge beginning May 28, according to the forecast.

“Numerous showers and storms should form and push toward the East Coast by (May 28) afternoon,” the agency said, adding that “frequent lightning” will also be a threat.

The typical summer showers are likely to start late that afternoon in Volusia County, with an 80% chance of rain.

During the evening and into the morning of May 29, chances decrease to around 30%, but they surge back up to 80% in the afternoon.

Over the weekend, rain chances in the afternoon will vary between 80% and 90%. During the morning and evening hours, chances will be around 50%.

Forecasters said Volusia and Flagler residents can expect “very muggy conditions” as “high temperatures should range generally in the mid to upper 80s, with lows in the low-to-mid 70s.”

Flagler County weather forecast calls for showers, thunderstorms

Flagler County residents can expect a similar outlook, with increasingly high chances of rain until the weekend.

Chances climb to 60% May 27 between 2 and 5 p.m., according to the forecast.

The same probability continues into the morning of May 28, but chances surge to 90% in the afternoon.

High probability points on May 29 and into the weekend to afternoon rain, between 80 and 90%. Rain chances will only be as low as 50% during the next few days.

Rainfall totals between 2 and 3 inches are expected in Flagler County between May 27 and early next week, according to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.

Will the rain continue next week in Volusia and Flagler?

Yes.

According to the National Weather Service, models are still uncertain “regarding how long this unsettled weather pattern will stick around.”

“High coverage of showers and storms should persist” at least until Tuesday, June 2, the forecast says. “Statistical guidance tends to agree with that assessment, with rain chances above 70% on both Monday and Tuesday. Locally excessive rainfall will remain a concern.”
